Learn

Start with a simple formula: grass-fed tallow, purified and infused with plants, made in our laboratory in Andorra.

Crema Botani Tallow abierta, con la tapa apoyada al lado

No water. No preservatives. No emulsifiers. Grass-fed tallow. Andorra · Km 0. Six steps.

The idea

Yes, we use purified animal fat.

Our formulas give your skin what it needs: no fillers, no toxins, no unnecessary ingredients. We do not hide the raw material; we show you where it comes from and how we work it.

Sebo purificado, la materia de la que sale todo

The skin barrier contains lipids that help hold moisture in and protect the skin.

Many cosmetic formulas use water, emulsifiers and other ingredients to get their texture and shelf life.

Tallow is rich in fatty acids. We purify it slowly and turn it into a cosmetic base that is easy to apply.

The difference

A traditional base, worked a different way.

Tallow contains fatty acids such as oleic, palmitic and stearic. We start from that material and purify it by hand in small batches.

Then we infuse it with selected plants and formulate each product for one specific need, with an ingredient list that is easy to check.

How it’s made

Six steps, no shortcuts.

What is inside

Tallow is not just fat.

It carries four fat-soluble vitamins and the same fatty acids your skin makes to protect itself. They are there because the animal stores them in its fat, not because we added them afterwards.

Retinol

The repair vitamin: it plays a part in wound healing and in forming new cells. In cosmetics it is associated with firmer skin and with fewer signs of wrinkling and slackness. Grass-fed tallow carries it as standard, because the animal stores it in its own fat.

Cholecalciferol

The sunshine one. It has an anti-inflammatory role and takes part in cell renewal, which is what keeps skin working at its own pace instead of ageing early. It is fat-soluble: it travels in fat, not in water, which is why it arrives here intact.

Tocopherol

The formula’s fat-soluble antioxidant. It slows the oxidation of fats, the ones in the jar and the ones in your skin, and helps protect against ultraviolet radiation and eases irritation. It is also why our products need no preservatives.

Cobalamin

It plays a part in cell regeneration, brings inflammation down and is associated with a more even tone, with less hyperpigmentation. It is uncommon in plant-based cosmetics: it is one of the things only an animal fat brings.

Conjugated linoleic acid

The fatty acid that explains why tallow hydrates without blocking. It does not seal the skin like a sheet of plastic: it lets moisture in and out, so the skin regulates itself. That is the difference between feeding skin and smothering it.

Oleic acid

The main fatty acid in grass-fed tallow, and the one that makes it so easy to absorb: it sinks in rather than sitting on top. The same one that dominates olive oil.

Palmitic acid

One of the ones your own skin makes to keep its barrier closed. Its presence here is why skin recognises the formula at once instead of treating it as something foreign.

Stearic acid

It gives tallow its body: that butter-like texture that melts with the warmth of your fingers. It also helps everything else (oils, infusion, vitamins) stay where it belongs.

And what we add

Four plants, slowly infused.

No extracts, no drop of fragrance. The tallow is infused with them for days and keeps what they give up.

  • Calendula Calms reactive skin
  • Chamomile Brings redness down
  • Lavender Balance and scent
  • Plantain Repairs and protects

Our formulas contain essential oils. If your skin is very sensitive or you have a known allergy, read the ingredient list before buying and patch-test on your forearm first.

Process log · Andorra

Sebo purificado en la cuchara, antes de montar
  1. i.

    Melt

Sebo sólido fundiéndose en el cazo, con la mitad todavía en trozos blancos

The fat goes in solid and comes out liquid, over low heat. It is the only point where it really gets hot, and it is done slowly so as not to scorch it.

  2. ii.

    Purify

Sebo fundido separado en capas, con la espumadera retirando la película de arriba

What is not fat gets separated out. This is where the smell comes from: badly purified tallow smells of what it was, and well purified tallow smells of nothing.

  3. iii.

    Strain

Grasa dorada cayendo a hilo por un colador fino forrado de muselina

Fine filtering, then again. What makes it through the strainer is all that reaches the jar.

  4. iv.

    Infuse

Pétalos de caléndula y lavanda en reposo dentro de la grasa, a contraluz

The plants sit in the fat until they give up what they have. No extract is added: it is infused, which takes longer.

  5. v.

    Whip

Varillas levantando un pico de crema montada sobre la superficie estriada

Whipped until it takes on the body of a cream. With no water and no emulsifiers, the texture comes from the whipping and the temperature, and nothing else.

  6. vi.

    Jar

Tarro negro llenándose de crema, alisada al ras con una espátula

By hand, jar by jar, with the batch number written on. That number is the one on the product page.

Why it takes time

None of them can be rushed.

Each step does something different and all of them need their time. Skipping one, or rushing it, shows up in the result: in the smell, in the texture or in how long it lasts.

And the place matters as much as the method. For the fat to be good the animal has to have eaten grass outdoors, not feed in a shed with eight hundred thousand others. In Andorra we have that close at hand, and that is why the laboratory is here.

What the research says

Evidence, and its limits.

A scoping review found signs of moisturising properties, but notes that cosmetic studies in humans and conclusive data on possible adverse effects are still missing. We do not present this review as clinical proof of Botani Tallow products.

What you ask us

We promise no miracles. Tallow does not erase wrinkles and does not replace medical treatment.

  1. 01 Animal fat on my face? That sounds odd.

It sounds odd because we have had seventy years of synthetics. It used to be standard: when someone cut themselves, tallow went on the wound. What we have done is bring it back with today’s technology and knowledge.

  2. 02 Does it smell of animal?

No. The smell is exactly what gets taken out during purification: six steps, and that is their whole point. What is left smells of the plant it is infused with.

  3. 03 Will it clog my pores?

That is not what we see, nor what the people using it tell us. Because it is so close to the fat your skin already makes, it absorbs instead of sitting on top. Even so, every skin is its own: if yours does not get on with it, tell Pili.

  4. 04 Do I have to throw out my creams?

You do not have to throw out anything. Start by reading the ingredients of what you already own. If water and petroleum derivatives are near the top, you now know why your skin feels tight a few hours later.

  5. 05 Is it good for sensitive skin?

That is where we get thanked most, because the formula is short and carries no synthetic fragrance. If you have a diagnosed condition, ask first: this is cosmetics, not medical treatment.

  6. 06 Is it suitable for vegans?

No. Tallow is animal fat and we do not hide it. If you want vegan cosmetics, this is not your brand.

Where to start

Four products. One single base.
